Background[edit]

Bronson began attracting major attention after collaborations with American music producers, Statik Selektah (Well-Done) and The Alchemist (Rare Chandeliers). In August 2012, Bronson signed a recording contract with the Warner Bros. Records and Atlantic Records' imprint Vice Records.[2] His first release for Vice was an extended play (EP) titled Saaab Stories, released on June 11, 2013. After announcing the title of his first studio album for Vice, in May 2014, Bronson spoke with New Musical Express about the album, 'The album is sounding incredible. The whole album is a standout. I don't care about individual songs, I'm trying to make a complete, classic project. I just do my music uninfluenced by anybody else, or current trends, and it comes together at the end. Nothing needs to have a fucking theme all the time. This is just rap. I'm not trying to make people think I'm some sort of scientific wizard or inspirational poet. Fuck that! It's just happy, funny, rugged, rough rap.'[3] On November 24, 2014, Bronson revealed he had finished recording the album.[4]

Release and promotion[edit]

On May 16, 2014, Bronson announced the title of the album in a Twitter update, when he tweeted: 'MY ALBUM BEEN NAMED. THE ONLY THING TO DESCRIBE ME. MR. WONDERFUL. THATS BEEN ME SINCE I STEPPED IN THIS BULLSHIT.'[5][6] On November 28, 2014, Bronson revealed there would be a worldwide concert tour upon the album's release.[4] On December 24, 2014, he took to Twitter to reveal the album would have guest appearances by Meyhem Lauren, Big Body Bes, Party Supplies, Chauncy Sherod and Chance the Rapper.[7] Later that day, after exposing several fake track lists, Bronson tweeted 13 song titles, unveiling the album's official track listing.[8] On January 7, 2015, Bronson revealed the album would be released on March 24.[9] The following day, after releasing a song from the album titled 'Actin Crazy', Bronson posted which artists would be featured on which song.[10][11][12] On January 14, 2015, Bronson made an appearance on the New York City radio station Hot 97's Funkmaster Flex show, to promote Mr. Wonderful and performed a freestyle, which prompted Flex to declare Bronson the 'nicest in the game right now'.[13] On March 11, 2015, Bronson announced on Twitter that his album would be released one day sooner than originally scheduled.[14]

Singles[edit]

On August 5, 2014, Bronson released 'Easy Rider' as the album's first single.[15] The song was produced by Bronson's long time producer Party Supplies. On August 20, 2014, the music video for 'Easy Rider', directed by Tom Gould, was released. The video pays homage to the 1969 Peter Fonda/Dennis Hopper film Easy Rider.[16] After premiering the song on January 7, 2015, Bronson officially released 'Actin Crazy', via digital distribution, as the album's second single on January 20, 2015.[17] On February 16, 2015, 'Terry' was released as the third single alongside the pre-order for the album. On March 3, 2015, 'Baby Blue' was released as the album's fourth single.[1] The song features Chicago-bred recording artist Chance the Rapper. Bronson confirmed on Twitter that they were pushing this single to radio stations and that they were filming a music video for the song.[14]

Mr. Wonderful received positive reviews from music critics. At Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from critics, the album received an average score of 77, which indicates 'generally favorable reviews', based on 17 reviews.[18] Writing for Exclaim!, Samantha O'Connor noted that Bronson has become 'a more serious artist focused on experimentation' with the record, further noting that the project's 'varying production clashes throughout the disorganized project.'[22] Jay Balfour of HipHopDX said, 'Tellingly and thankfully, the most out-of-pocket moves on Mr. Wonderful aren’t uncharacteristic appeals to radio but cases of its artist leaning further into the territory he’s been hinting at. Unlike the rest of his albums and mixtapes up to this point though, Mr. Wonderful is a multi-producer affair and it jumps around noticeably as a result.'[23]

Kellan Miller of XXL said, 'But aside from a few problematic miscues, the majority of Mr. Wonderful can be maneuvered without the skip button in tow, culminating in “Easy Rider,” a fittingly assertive statement realized through unfurled rhymes that don’t require a chorus to stick in the imagination. Unshaved, donned in sweatpants, and with a compelling major label debut to his credit, Action Bronson is appropriately attired as hip-hop’s latest star.'[28] Colin Fitzgerald of PopMatters said, 'Mr. Wonderful may not come off as the sweeping epic its coda hints at, but it’s an entertaining and unique experience that only Bronson could give us. Few rap albums can be this different and still satisfying.'[25]

Commercial performance[edit]

The album debuted at number 7 on the US Billboard 200, his total sales accounted for 48,540 streams and sales (43,564 traditional album sales).[29] It was the third highest selling album in the United States that week.[30]

'Baby Blue' is a song by American rapper Action Bronson with a guest appearance from fellow rapper Chance the Rapper. It was released on March 3, 2015 by Atlantic and Vice as the fourth and final single from his second album Mr. Wonderful (2015). It was co-written by both artists, along with Zane Lowe, who did a punch-up to the chorus, and Mark Ronson, who also produced the song. A breakup song, 'Baby Blue' ends a three-part suite started by 'City Boy Blues' and 'A Light in the Addict' that is preluded by the album's interlude, 'Thug Love Story 2017 The Musical'.

The song received positive reviews from critics, who generally praised Chance's verse. 'Baby Blue' was Bronson's first solo appearance on the Billboard Hot 100, debuting at number 91 for one week. It also charted at numbers 21 and 30 on the Hot Rap Songs and Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs charts respectively. The song was certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), denoting sales of over 500,000 copies. An accompanying music video for the song, directed by Lil Chris, was released on Bronson's YouTube page as part of the 2015 YouTube Music Awards and pays homage to the 1988 comedy film Coming to America.

Background and development[edit]

Following the album's first single 'Easy Rider' (2014) and the digital release of 'Actin' Crazy' (2015), Action Bronson revealed the track list for Mr. Wonderful and showed which songs had collaborations to them.[1] 'Baby Blue' was produced by Mark Ronson, who had previously produced for singers like Daniel Merriweather and Bruno Mars. The song was written by Ronson, Arian Arslani, Chancellor Bennett and Zane Lowe. It acts as a closer to a three-part suite set by 'City Boy Blues' and 'A Light in the Addict' that was preluded by the album's interlude, 'Thug Love Story 2017 The Musical'. It's about an elderly man who laments about a former love leaving the streets.[2]

In an interview with Complex, Bronson explained that he wanted to put together a small musical with the three tracks he had within the album and found the ending to it as a kiss-off to a former flame and moving on from it.[3] The beat to Lord Tariq and Peter Gunz's 'Deja Vu (Uptown Baby)' (1997) was used as a reference by Ronson to come up with the song's opening.[4] The chorus to the song: 'Why you gotta act like a bitch when I'm with you / Baby girl, I'm blue,' was co-written by then-BBC Radio 1 host Zane Lowe, with Bronson providing vocals to it.[4][5]Chance the Rapper, credited as a featured artist on the recording, explained to Complex that his verse for the song was inspired by an amalgam of various women he had previously encountered, while lending levity to the outcome of it all.[6]

Critical reception[edit]

Critics praised Chance the Rapper's verse in the song.

'Baby Blue' garnered positive reviews from music critics. Pat Levy of Consequence of Sound praised Bronson's singing over the piano-heavy production but singled out Chance's verse as the highlight for his 'laundry list of things he hopes will happen to the girl who romantically maligned him.'[7] Dan Weiss of Spin called it the standout of the album's suite, due in particular to Chance's absurdly dark and humorous lyrics.[8] Jay Balfour from HipHopDX called it 'a catchy piano-driven track with Pop appeal' and found Chance's verse on the song to be 'personal and delightfully petty.'[9] Colin Fitzgerald of PopMatters put the track alongside 'Easy Rider' as 'album highlights', saying that without them 'the album's second half would seriously hinder the overall value of Mr. Blazing angels squadrons of wwii wii iso download torrent. Wonderful.'[10] Craig Jenkins of Billboard commended Bronson for having 'the courage to sing serviceably on the chorus.'[11] Jordan Sargent of Pitchfork criticized Bronson's whiny vocals and Ronson's production throughout the song but gave praise to Chance's quirk-filled verse, saying that 'he pulls off in half a minute what Bronson couldn’t in fifteen: using an imagined story to reveal humanity through humor.'[2]

Music video[edit]

On March 9, 2015, Bronson stated via his Twitter account that a music video for the song was being worked on.[12] He released a one-minute long 'teaser' for the video on his YouTube page on March 21.[13] Two days later, it premiered on Bronson's YouTube page as part of the 2015 YouTube Music Awards.[14] The Lil Chris-directed video is a tribute to the 1988 comedy film Coming to America,[15] with Bronson playing every character Eddie Murphy portrayed throughout the film.[16] American rapper Big Body Bes and bodybuilder Jill Rudison both appear as Arsenio Hall and Shari Headley's characters respectively.[17][18]

Live performances[edit]

On March 22, 2015, Bronson and Chance performed the song during SXSW at the 2015 mtvU Woodie Awards.[19] On March 25, two days after the release of his second album, Bronson sang the song with Chance on national television for the first time on the Late Show with David Letterman[20] with Chance's band The Social Experiment.[21][22] On April 21, Bronson made an appearance on DJ Skee's SKEE TV via Fuse.[23]
